Dr. Feres is a periodontist (Certificate and Masters degrees), received her Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) degree in Oral Biology from Harvard University/Forsyth Institute (USA) and has a Post-doctoral Fellowship in Microbiology from Forsyth Institute. She is the Dean for Dental Research and Graduate Education and a full-time professor (Periodontal Department) at Guarulhos University (SP, Brazil)
She is the President Elect of the International Academy of Periodontology (IAP) and of the IADR Periodontal Research Group, Associate Editor of the International Dental Journal, and a member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Dental Research, Clinical Oral Implants Research, Journal of Periodontology and Journal of Periodontal Research.
Research Interests
Her main research field is the diagnostic and treatment of different periodontal infections, with great emphasis on Randomized Clinical Trials evaluating the clinical and microbiological effects of antimicrobial agents in the treatment of periodontitis. Other areas of research include: the influence of supragingival plaque control in the outcomes of periodontal treatment, control of bacteria in dental aerosols, halitosis, peri-implantitis, in vitro and ex vivo biofilm models and oral ecology, including the search for novel periodontal pathogens.
Other highlights
Dr. Feres has received some important awards, including the Clinical Research Award given by the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) for the “most outstanding scientific article with direct clinical relevance in periodontics”, in the year of 2002. In 2014, one of her publications (Pérez-Chaparro et al. 2014) was selected for the F1000Prime, and it was recommended as being of special significance in the periodontal field by Dr. Robert Palmer, a renowned researcher at NIDCR (MD, USA). Further, Dr. Feres has lectured extensively in United States, Europe, Latin America and Asia, and has authored over 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals, having an ISI h-index of 26 and a Scopus h-index of 27.
