Education and Professional Activities
Dr Duarte received her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree in 1999 from the Piracicaba School of Dentistry, Campinas State University, Brazil. She also received her Masters (2003) and PhD degrees (2005) in Periodontology from the Piracicaba School of Dentistry, Campinas State University, Brazil. Recently, she joined in the University of Florida as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Periodontics. She is actively involved in teaching and research at the Guarulhos University, in São Paulo.
She is member of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), of the IADR Periodontal Research Group and of the IADR Women in Science Network Group. She is also member of the Guarulhos University’s Ethics Committee in Clinical Research.
Research Interests
Her main research field is the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal infections, especially in patients presenting risk factors for periodontal diseases such as diabetes, obesity and smoking. Other researchers include the impact of different risk factors (e.g. hypertension, osteoporosis, caffeine, alcohol, diabetes, smoking) on the periodontitis and on the osseointegration using animal models as well as the clinical outcomes of different mucogingival techniques including gingivoplasty and gingival grafts.
Other highlights
She has received several Research Grants from the São Paulo State Research Foundation (FAPESP) and from the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals on periodontal and implant dentistry issues. Since 2007, Dr. Duarte has been granted with a scholarship from the CNPq for the outstanding Brazilian researchers.
